"I believe . . .". These are the opening words of the Apostles' Creed
Belief comes at many different levels, there are three levels of belief
that seem relevant to what we are studying. There are things I believe in
simply because I accept them to be facts but they make little or no difference
to me in my daily life, my belief in those things does not make them more or
less true. There are other things I believe that will make some difference to
me but the difference they would make is of only a temporal nature and in time
I might change that believe. There are
things I believe that make an eternal difference and that actually demand some
kind of response from me.
o
I
believe that a woman will one day be president
o
I
believe that eating the right foods keep me healthy
o
I
believe that God raised Jesus from the
dead
Other
people's believes are different from mine. I can say I believe in Muhammad and
Buddha in as much as I believe them to have been real people in history as
Jesus also was real. But my belief in those men has no life-changing
significance for me. These men though they existed are not what will have
eternal value nor will they offer salvation for me in this life
It is dangerous to say it doesn't matter what we believe. This leads to
a false assumption that all religions lead to the true God. It does
matter what we believe. YES!
You believe that there is one
God. Good! Even the demons believe that - and shudder. James 2:19
"No one comes to the Father (God) except through me."
Acceptance of teaching or tradition is not the
same as true faith and a foundation a sound unchangeable truth. It is possible
to know, to recite and to believe the Apostles creed but not know God and His salvation and love.
In the past 2000 years many ministers and priests with spiritual
authority have misused it, bringing people into submission to themselves and
traditions rather than to a personal
relationship with Our Heavenly Father. This As soon
as any person, or group of people, begin to claim and control what other people's belief or morals we have false believe and errand faith .
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11
It is good for us to get to learn the Scriptures - not just to learn but through a relationship with God to get revelation and to test what you believe. There are doctrines being taught as true - even used as basis for membership in a denominations or church. Questioning doctrines is not the same as questioning God!
